Our first international workshop was convened at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., in March of 2017, with a geographic focus on Muslim Eurasia, a region that presently includes roughly one-hundred million Muslims. The workshop featured 25 scholars from the United States, Europe, Russia, and Central Asia, whose work focused on Islam in Russia and Central Asia. Participants included: Sergey Abashin, Ulfat Abdurasulov, Ulan Bigozhin, Noor Borbieva, Alfrid Bustanov, Ian Campbell, Devin DeWeese, Allen J. Frank, Benjamin Gatling, Seema Golestaneh, Marianne Kamp, Agnes Kefeli, Paul Losensky, Patrick Michelson, Leone Musgrave, James Pickett, Paolo Sartori, Wendell Schwab, Ron Sela, Pavel Shabley, Nazif Shahrani, Shamil Shikhaliev, Gulnaz Sibgatullina, Jennifer Webster, and William Wood. The keynote address was delivered by Jamal Elias.
A scholarly volume--Muslim Religious Authority in Central Eurasia, edited by Ron Sela, Paolo Sartori, and Devin DeWeese--emerged from this workshop.
